“In spite of what the Russians say about the fixed weight kettlebell's, progressive adding of weight as you get stronger forces the body to adapt by increasing muscle fiber size, strengthening ligaments and tendons and most of all increasing strength. I have spent most of my professional life studying the human body's responses to stress and trauma. There is no question that microtrauma that gradually and progressively increases leads to adaptation. One of the real benefits of kettlebell training if weights are added slowly and progressively is strengthening of the muscles that allow for core stability. Increasing Core stability is probably the most important thing that anyone can do to prevent back problems and rehabilitate once an acute back pain attack has subsided. The standard Russian kettlebell's have too big a jump between weights and during the ballistic maneuvers a weight that it is too heavy can actually exacerbate back problems. I like to think of it as sneaking up on the muscles by gradually increasing the weight as the muscles get stronger and joint flexibility improves -- thanks again “ - MR, M.D.
